Features & Capabilities

Emby unites your videos, music, and photos into a single, beautifully organized library and streams them to any device. It auto-transcodes media on the fly and presents artwork, metadata, and related content for a polished viewing experience.

Requires the Emby Media Server. It offers sharing, parental controls, cloud sync, and easy casting. The app is free to browse and cast; playback can be unlocked with an in-app purchase or via an Emby Premiere subscription ($6.99/month).

User Reviews

User reviews show a split experience: several report fast, reliable playback and a polished interface, along with strong offline/online support and on-the-fly transcoding control. However, many critics highlight reliability issues on iOS—frequent loading failures, playback not starting, or audio/video drops—along with offline download problems. A minority criticize paywalls restricting basic playback and note UI inconsistencies or feature removals. Overall, Emby on iOS works well when stable, but suffers from stability and monetization concerns that affect consistency.
Pros
  • Fast loading and smooth playback when the app works, with several notes of performance improvements after updates (e.g., on iPad).
  • Clean, intuitive interface and easy library management; users value having a single app for their media library.
  • Offline and online mode support, with downloads and offline viewing behaving well after updates for many users.
  • Transcoding quality can be adjusted on the fly, giving users playback control.
  • Some users view Emby as a privacy-conscious, easy-to-use alternative to Plex/Jellyfin.
Cons
  • Frequent loading failures on iOS, with the app often launching but not loading (green ring).
  • Playback often fails to start or stutters, including tracks stuck at 0:00 or audio dropping during playback.
  • Offline downloads can fail or be very slow, and offline mode is not always reliable.
  • Paywalls block basic playback features, leading to frustration and perceived monetization-focused holdovers.
  • UI/UX inconsistencies and changes/ removals (e.g., missing next button, janky navigation, inability to hide Downloads) affect polish and usability.

I am someone who uses MB almost on the daily. I have a family member who runs a server and allows me to watch and stream media that I wanna watch however, within recent updates, I have noticed I am no longer allowed to screen cast, and I use a projector as my TV so now I’m no longer allowed to watch Emby as TV so thanks for whatever update you did because you’ve completely destroyed your app for me.

Latest update makes some vids playback with sound but black screen :-( Don’t forget to check in iOS to be sure the Emby app has “Local Network” enabled. Otherwise, you will get a lot of playback errors.
