User Reviews

Jellyfin Mobile on iOS shows a clean UI and solid core streaming but is hampered by stability and connectivity issues: frequent freezes, no background playback, difficult server connections, subtitle problems, and flaky downloads. On the plus side, setup is relatively seamless and streaming from the Jellyfin library works when the app is functioning. Overall, it needs robust background playback, reliability improvements, and clearer onboarding.
Pros
  • Clean, responsive, and snappy UI.
  • Seamless server setup and client access.
  • Core functionality to stream media from the Jellyfin library.
  • Some users can access their Jellyfin server remotely from the app.
Cons
  • No background playback; playback stops when the screen sleeps or when the app is in the background.
  • Frequent playback freezes or stalls and can require reconnecting to the server.
  • Connection and discovery issues, including local network access prompts and manual server entry.
  • Subtitle scaling issues and non-responsive subtitle settings.
  • Offline/download support is unreliable or not available.

I have this setup on my server rack that handles networking, Homebridge, and others. And honestly, this mobile app version was a HUGE game-changer. However, when I try to download a video, it gives me an error with an object that is this: {{title}} pls help or fix it.

The one thing that I want it to do is play music. It constantly goes to sleep. You can’t even play one song. It does not have background play. It is not good. It is worse in every way than just using a web browser.

I really like this app, but it’s incredibly frustrating that anything I’m watching will freeze every couple minutes, I’ll back it up ten seconds, then it’ll work for another couple minutes, then freeze completely. Then I back out of my episode I’m watching and try to relaunch it, only to find it “can’t connect to server” then I have to put my server address in again and MAYBE that’ll get it back to the poor performance it showed before, or not work at all for an hour. It needs a lot more work.
