Features & Capabilities

The official US Coast Guard Boating Safety App provides recreational boaters with 24/7 access to essential information and resources. Learn state boating laws, request vessel safety checks through the Coast Guard Auxiliary, determine legally required safety equipment, and even draft a float plan with friends or family.

This self-contained mobile tool also offers quick access to navigation rules, NOAA weather from the nearest buoy, and easy reporting of navigational hazards, pollution, or suspicious activity. It is not a replacement for a VHF radio, safety classes, or common sense; your data is shared with the Coast Guard only if you choose to provide it.

User Reviews

The app offers essential safety tools like float plans, vessel checks, NOAA buoy data, and storing vessel information, but is hampered by crashes, UI bugs that block saving/editing, outdated maintenance, and confusing navigation. These issues reduce reliability in emergencies, though the core features could be lifesaving when fixed.
Pros
  • Float plan filing with the USCG
  • Vessel Safety Check checklist
  • NOAA buoy locations/data (buoy finder)
  • Storing vessel information for emergency reporting
  • Access to safety resources (NAV rules, weather)
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability, especially with location services or NOAA buoy features
  • Inability to save/edit vessel or profile due to UI/UX bugs (save button blocked, emergency button covering save)
  • App appears outdated and poorly maintained (last update years ago)
  • Navigation/UX issues: links not working, can't return to home, login required to use features
  • Accessibility/compatibility issues (poor VoiceOver support; not working on older devices/OS)

This app continues to crash. I hope the creators and developers can take another look at it. When my screen opens up, it goes to profile that I cannot edit and will not let me go to the home screen.

Doesn’t work. Literally every link does not work. Will not help in the case of emergency, let alone in the case of planning a safe trip out to sea. Terrible. Expected much better from the USCG.

I just installed this after doing an online safety at sea course. I was excited to have the coast guard directly on my phone and be able to make float plans. However, the app buttons don’t work. Cannot make a profile, and there are no functions that can be used it seems unless you login. I noticed the last update was 6 years ago. It must be seriously outdated, probably the server is not being maintained or something like that. Very unreliable from a public service that promotes being reliable and dependable? I’m am negatively amazed about how bad this app is.
