Overview

Features & Capabilities

eBird Mobile makes it easy to record the birds you see in the field and link observations directly to eBird, a global database used by birders worldwide. The app supports offline use, GPS-based location plotting, and a full global taxonomy, with common names available in local languages.

Keep a running list with 'record as you go', view checklists tailored to your location and season, explore hundreds of thousands of eBird hotspots, and sync data to your eBird account across iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It also includes multilingual translations (German, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Dutch) and offline functionality for areas with limited connectivity.

User Reviews

eBird is widely praised as a valuable citizen-science tool that helps users find birding spots, track species, and view personal stats. However, multiple reviews cite stability issues—crashes and pack loading failures—along with media upload difficulties, login problems, and Merlin integration gaps. Some users also request a dark mode and broader location search beyond a 30-mile radius. Overall, the app is highly regarded for its purpose, but multiple reliability and usability issues recur in user feedback.
Pros
  • Valuable citizen-science tool that supports data collection for researchers.
  • Helps users find nearby birding spots and track species with community sightings.
  • Shows detailed stats about birds you've seen and hotspots, enabling progress tracking.
  • Widely loved by users and considered one of the best birding apps.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes, freezes, and pack-loading failures that block progress.
  • Difficult or non-intuitive media uploads; adding photos is cumbersome.
  • Merlin integration is awkward or problematic for some users.
  • Login/account issues persist for some users (can't sign in or verify).
  • Missing features: no dark mode and limited location search (30-mile radius).

I’d love to see a widget for easy accessibility

App is very clunky and difficult to navigate. Need the ability to log a checklist from anywhere in the country instead of only in my close radius. Birds should be sorted by location by showing the most recent birds up top. So much scrolling to find the birds that are actually at the location. Would love the ability to see a profile or photo of the birds by clicking the species in the checklist options.
