User Reviews

Overall, users repeatedly praise Music Wrench for its core strength: real-time, continuous intonation feedback with a color-coded display, plus double-stop detection and handy practice tools like a metronome and scales. The app is valued as a coaching and tuning aid for violinists (and teachers). However, multiple reviews note a cluttered, dated UI and a subscription model that can feel opaque or misrepresented, with many features effectively gated behind paywalls. Additional recurring downsides include sparse scorekeeping capabilities, no robust musicXML import, and limited instrument coverage (no viola C string support).
Pros
  • Real-time continuous intonation feedback with a color-coded display
  • Double-stop recognition and vibrato feedback
  • Built-in metronome and scales practice tools
  • Valued as a coaching and tuning aid for violinists and teachers
  • Auto-recording with the ability to review recent playing sessions
Cons
  • Cluttered, dated or non-intuitive user interface
  • Subscription model with features gated behind paywalls and pricing confusion
  • Lack of robust scorekeeping features (no comprehensive scoring or export/import such as MusicXML)
  • Limited instrument support (no viola C string)
  • Content accessibility depends on subscription; some content unavailable without paying

This app is exactly what I’m looking for but the user interface is extremely inelegant and the main screen you see when you’re using it seems too crowded, with the menu bar permanently on the side and impossible to move or minimize. I’ve clicked every button and cant find anywhere to subscribe, and most of the content isn’t available if you don’t subscribe. I’ve tried clicking on some of the grayed-out songs on the “songs” tab and it just says “can’t connect to iTunes Store” for every one. I see from past reviews the paid version of the app used to be $5. It’s now 99 cents a month (according to the “help” tab) and honestly given how slapped-together the app seems I don’t know if that’s worth it. It’s been around for several years and aside from bug fixes I don’t see a lot of effort having been put into making the app look or function better. I’d pay $5 in a heartbeat for the gamble of this app working as well as I need it to, if the app would even let me. Make it $5 and give me a way to pay the $5 and I’ll try it again!

Music Wrench is unique in its ability to provide real-time feedback on the intonation of both single notes and double-stops while playing the violin. Because it is always recording, you can effortlessly scroll back and review the last minute or so of playing without ever having to think about starting a recording. There is simply nothing else on the market that has its ability to show you whether your intervals are in tune. I’m not sure what I would do without Music wrench.

This is a stand out app no doubt. The fact that it recognizes and displays double stops is phenomenal. What I was really really hoping for is some kind of scorekeeping. But there is none. This app could be phenomenal and so much more powerful with a more robust interactive scorekeeping system. For instance, a two octave scale is displayed, you play it on your violin, and when you’re done, you ask the app to record the score. The score would be your success at playing each note, for instance, 50% of E flat notes were within 10 cents. 90% of A naturals were within five cents. Etc. There is a rudimentary score keeping system limited to an individual song. It’s better than nothing, but I would love to see a comprehensive spreadsheet type of record keeping system that you could use to really drill down to individual notes and hammer out where your biggest problem areas are. Thank you!
