Features & Capabilities

Not Emacs is a text editor for programmers that supports many of the most common emacs keybindings. It allows editing iCloud documents that are automatically available from other devices. The app has been designed to be used with an external Bluetooth keyboard, but if you forgot it at home, it is still possible to get by with the extended virtual keyboard.

This app is based on the ymacs editor (http://www.ymacs.org) and the Gambit Scheme programming system (http://gambitscheme.org). It has syntax highlighting for the following languages: Lisp, Scheme, JavaScript, CSS and XML.

User Reviews

Reviews praise Not Emacs as a usable, Emacs-like editor on iOS, but repeatedly highlight critical portability and feature gaps. Users report that saved text is hard to locate or export, with unclear file storage and no straightforward filesystem access. Additional concerns include the absence of core Emacs capabilities (Elisp, major modes, syntax highlighting) and limited options for sharing or transferring files via iCloud/open-in. Despite strong positive sentiment toward the concept and execution, these issues limit practical use and data portability.
Pros
  • A usable Emacs-like text editor on iOS.
  • Positive overall reception and praise for the app and its execution.
  • Not Emacs is seen as a well-executed concept with potential to improve iOS text editing.
Cons
  • Inability to export or copy text to other apps; text retrieval is not straightforward.
  • Unclear or missing filesystem; saved files are hard to locate and access.
  • Missing core Emacs functionality (Elisp support, major modes, syntax highlighting) and a limited editing environment.
  • Limited options for sharing or transferring files via iCloud/open-in.
