User Reviews

Keyman is praised for broad language and script support and a feature-rich experience, especially useful for scholars typing Syriac, Amharic, Latin, and hieroglyphs. However, it faces repeated issues: updates causing crashes or freezes, poor compatibility with external keyboards, inconsistent performance across apps, and privacy concerns over full-access requirements and data transmission. It’s powerful for multilingual typing when it works, but reliability and security handling need significant improvement.
Pros
  • Wide range of languages and scripts supported, including many ancient and minority systems
  • Rich feature set that enables typing complex scripts and linguistic varieties
  • Valuable for scholarly and linguistic use (e.g., Syriac, Amharic, Latin, hieroglyphs)
  • Strong positive user sentiment in some reviews, with praise for overall capability and usefulness
Cons
  • Instability after updates: crashes, freezes, and general unreliability
  • Incompatibility with external keyboards (Apple Smart Keyboard and Magic Keyboard)
  • Inconsistent functionality across apps, with some apps not showing or responding to the keyboard
  • Privacy and data concerns due to full-access permission requirements and claims that keystrokes are transmitted

This keyboard has been very helpful to me for custom glyphs and layouts with more symbol acceesibility than the default iOS keyboard, but it's been severely lacking. For one, it seems to be poorly maintained; I don't even know if it is at all. It doesn't make any attempt to integrate with the design language of iOS, which is unfortunate and disapoointing—there aren't even any in-built appearance options either, so you're stuck with the default. The biggest issue has been when the keyboard crashes, mandating a phone restart for it to function again. Previously, it only happened if I turned off the screen while the keyboard was in-use, but now, it happens at random whether or not the keyboard is active after locking the phone. It's highly frustrating and makes this keyboard unusable, despite its advantages over less trustworthy options (like Google's Gboard or Microsoft's SwiftBoard) that I've considered. It's even more annoying considering that with this keyboard non-functional, I don't have any one size fits all solution to my keyboard needs. Fix this keyboard, please. It's genuinely one of the best I know in terms of layouts, and it deserves more than to become a bug-riddled mess.

Pretty decent keyboard except if you leave it open for too long the entire keyboard goes blank and and i have to delete. reinstall, re add multiple times for it to work and this is everytime. very annoying, so hopefully it’ll be fixed
