User Reviews

Users praise xKeyboard for deep customization and cross-language sharing, especially for conlangs. Repeated downsides are costly paywalls, free-version limits, a steep learning curve, and missing essential features like swipe typing and autocorrect. Some stability issues after updates also surface. Overall, it's powerful but hampered by pricing and usability hurdles.
Pros
  • Very powerful and flexible keyboard customization, not just skins
  • Ability to share custom layouts with others, great for language communities
  • Especially useful for conlangs and minority languages; supports multiple scripts
  • Maintains a consistent style across languages and reduces need to install many keyboards
Cons
  • Paywall / VIP requirement to use custom keyboards and frequent pricing concerns
  • Free version is limited (only a couple of default keyboards) and many features require payment
  • Steep learning curve with minimal onboarding or tutorials
  • Missing core features (swipe typing, autocorrect, cursor control) and some usability shortcomings
  • Occasional stability issues after updates (stopped loading, occasional switch to regular keyboard)

I’m a linguist who’s very interested in writing systems, so this app is a godsend. Theres nothing else like it at all, and it keeps getting better with new updates. There’s so much you can do, especially with the environment feature that I haven’t even began to mess with yet. It’s intuitive to work with and not too complicated to make what you want in most cases. My only gripes are one or two minor glitches, the fact that not every character in Unicode is included in the character list, and some characters and are rendered as tofu, but that seems like an Apple problem.
