User Reviews

Users praise the hardware and basic pairing, and note useful wind/weather data when connected. However, the app suffers from unstable Bluetooth connections, crashes, and a dated UI. Post-update regressions further degrade usability. Support responsiveness is mentioned as lacking in at least one review. Overall, the hardware shows promise, but stability, background reconnection, UI polish, and reliable updates are needed for a dependable experience.
Pros
  • Strong hardware (WeatherDot) with capable wind sensing
  • Easy pairing with iPhone and straightforward Bluetooth setup
  • When connected, data capture is reliable and the app can function as a portable wind/weather station
Cons
  • Unreliable Bluetooth connectivity and frequent reconnections, leading to inconsistent data capture
  • App stability issues including crashes, bugs, and a sense of unfinished UI, with post-update regressions
  • Post-update regressions affecting connectivity and features (e.g., after updates it won't connect; compass/damping mode issues)

This review may be more about the Calypso device than about the app, but the app’s useless without the device so…. I bought the Calypso to log wind while sailing a dinghy, so I can merge that data with gps tracks to analyze sailing performance. Over 2 years of use, I’ve obtained useable wind data only about 50% of the time. This is a 14.5 ft open boat, so the Calypso and my phone should always be able to stay connected, per the device specs. I wonder if it’s able to reconnect (after losing connection) if the phone is asleep? So maybe this is about the app… I don’t know what the problem is, but the connection is too unreliable for the Calypso to be of much use, and definitely not worth what it costs.

The hardware—particularly the WeatherDot—is strong. Pairing with the iPhone is straightforward and the connection is stable during use. Data capture itself works reliably once connected. However, the app experience does not match the quality of the hardware. • Reconnection is a recurring issue. After initial use, the device often does not reconnect automatically. The only reliable workaround is to remove the instrument and pair it again, which is inefficient. • Battery status is not clearly exposed, which limits practical field use and planning. • The graphical interface feels unfinished. Data modes lack clarity, and the overall design appears dated and inconsistent with current iOS standards. • The app gives the impression of an early beta despite being on the App Store for many years. There is a solid foundation here. The hardware performs well, and the core functionality is in place. What is missing is refinement: • Reliable background reconnection • Clear device status (especially battery) • A modernized, simplified UI (clean layout, no background imagery, focus on data readability) With incremental improvements and a design update, this could become a very strong product.

This app connects flawlessly with my Calypso Ultrasonic Wind Sensor and Weather Dot. It’s like having a portable weather station. I can also use it to improve my golf game.
