User Reviews

WhatFont is praised as a Safari extension that quickly identifies fonts and saves time, with easy setup and strong value for typography enthusiasts. However, many reviews report cross‑device issues—especially on iPhone/iOS—where it doesn’t work or isn’t accessible in the actions menu, along with downtime and a lack of support. Setup guidance is sometimes unclear for new users. Overall, it’s appreciated when it works on Mac Safari but suffers from reliability and compatibility concerns.
Pros
  • Fast font identification that saves time for typography work.
  • Easy setup with clear, quick instructions (takes about a minute).
  • Indispensable and highly valued for font identification when it works.
  • Safari extension for Mac provides a familiar workflow for font detection.
Cons
  • Not working on iPhone/iOS; not appearing in the Safari actions menu on iPhone.
  • Has stopped working or is outdated/not updated for weeks; reliability concerns.
  • Poor or absent tech support; some users feel there’s little guidance when it fails.
  • Instructions seem to assume prior technical knowledge, making onboarding difficult for new users.
  • Viewed by some as only a Safari extension, not a full app, leading to expectations mismatch.

This is a browser extension for Safari. Didn’t work on my iPhone. I had it enabled, went to the newrepublic.com site in Safari, selected a font, and clicked the what font menu option. It said something to the effect of “select a text” but I’d already selected text. Not sure what the fix is, but I hope the developer can figure it out. I’ve a similar plugin installed on my laptop and it works like a champ there.

App doesn’t work. It doesn’t pull up in the actions menu of the iPhone. It’s outdated anyways. Don’t download.
