User Reviews

Users praise Musicnotes for its broad sheet music catalog, multiple key options, playback with looping, and good organization. However, recurring problems hurt the experience: sign-in and shop access failures after updates, frequent crashes and reliability issues during performances, and limited or confusing transposition with no easy way to preview keys before buying. Printing can be restricted and reprint charges apply. Billing/account problems and slow or unhelpful support also recur. Overall the app offers valuable content and tools, but reliability and billing usability need improvement.
Pros
  • Extensive catalog with a wide selection of pieces and multiple key options.
  • Playback with looping helps learn difficult sections.
  • Musicnotes Pro/Premium subscription is praised and often viewed as worth it.
  • Strong set/playlist organization for quick access and management.
Cons
  • Sign-in issues after updates: cannot sign in and shop access is blocked.
  • Frequent crashes and instability during use, including during performances.
  • Transposition limitations: cannot preview or easily transpose; many keys unavailable before purchase.
  • Printing and download restrictions: reprint charges and restrictions on printing from downloads.
  • Billing/account problems and slow or unhelpful customer support.

As a pianist I have to be able mark my music without it jerking and scribbling all over the page.

I was using my pedal to turn pages in MusicNotes for literal years when one day, it randomly stopped working. I followed all of the suggestions on their website, and it actually messed up the keyboard settings for my iPad in general. I'm not sure if it's the latest update, or maybe a strategy to get more people to purchase PDFs instead of reading from the app, but this issue has severely detrimented several of my professional performances already. I would definitely avoid this app until they have the pedal issue comletely resolved.

Musicians who need a reliable app for performances; DO NOT USE THIS APP! I’m stuck with this app bc of the amount of music I have purchased in the many years I’ve had it. It shuts down MULTIPLE times during performances, closes the app out entirely in the middle of songs, freezes during searches, only lets me upload one song at a time for set list creations, and so on. I have tried tech support, I have updated my iPad, archived songs as suggested, and still nothing. I told tech support this and crickets. They offered me no further suggestions, no fixes. So what do I do? Improv. I’ve learned to improv with one hand while reopening the app and finding the song with the other. I don’t recommend it, it’s stressful when you’re in the middle of, say, a wedding processional. Do not use this app if you will want a large library, if you’ll want to import .pdfs, or if you want reliability. It’s been garbage for me for 2+ years but I’m too financial invested in the music purchased at this point to stop using it. So learn from me: try something else.
