Overview

Features & Capabilities

codeSpark is an award-winning learn-to-code app for kids ages 3–10. With hundreds of coding games, puzzles, and creative tools, kids can learn by building their own games and stories. Preschoolers get pre-coding activities, while older kids can design, publish, and join monthly coding contests or collaborate in multiplayer challenges.

Code is learned through play, supported by research from MIT, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. Concepts include sequencing, loops, conditionals, events, and debugging—building problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity. The app is kid-safe and ad-free, with a parent dashboard and optional Hour of Code access. Subscriptions include flexible plans, with a 7-day free trial.

User Reviews

Codespark offers fun, educational, and creative coding experiences for kids and classrooms, with a strong emphasis on making and sharing games and stories. The main downsides cited are persistent bugs, confusing pricing, occasional account lockouts, limited multiplayer features, and slower content updates. Addressing stability and clarity around pricing, plus improving social features and update cadence, would boost its appeal while preserving its educational value.

  • Account access problems and difficulty recovering locked accounts
  • Limited multiplayer/social features and gated sharing
  • Content updates and new chapters appear infrequent

One-star experience. After creating/providing information, the app quickly pushed a subscription that was not clearly disclosed up front. The price appeared to be about $15/month, and I was uncomfortable with how much data it asked for before making the cost clear. It also appeared to direct payment outside the App Store, which is concerning for a kids’ app. I would not recommend it unless the pricing, privacy, and payment flow are made much more transparent.
