Features & Capabilities

Capo helps you learn songs by ear by analyzing your music to estimate chords, tempo, and key. Slow down playback, scrub to hear specific notes, and loop regions as you practice. You can isolate instruments or vocals to study parts, edit chords and regions, transpose keys, and save progress to Projects (iCloud) with Capo Pro. Note: Capo works with music you own and does not access streaming tracks; you can purchase DRM-free copies from the iTunes Store.

User Reviews

Users praise Capo for high‑fidelity slow‑down, strong looping and transcription tools, and cross‑device use on Mac and iPad, plus the ability to jam with original audio. However, several recurring issues temper enthusiasm: a subscription-driven model with feature gating and prior-purchase problems, unstable performance and occasional freezes, chord recognition inaccuracies, and a lack of streaming-service integration (local files only). Some users also note a confusing UI/UX. Overall, Capo is powerful for learning, but has notable reliability and pricing concerns.
Pros
  • High-fidelity slow-down/tempo control that preserves audio quality for accurate practice
  • Powerful learning and transcription toolkit (loops, regions, tempo, key, structure views) that aids ear training
  • Works well across Mac and iPad, helpful for learning songs and collaborating with others
  • Ability to jam with original audio and manipulate chords, aiding practice and transcription
  • Versatile across tunings and instruments, with features like left‑handed support
Cons
  • Subscription pricing and feature gating (one-time purchase value reduced; some features moved behind subscription) and grandfathering/purchase issues
  • Chord detection/identification can be inaccurate or inconsistent across songs
  • Stability concerns (app can freeze or hang, impacting workflow)
  • Limited to local audio files; no integration with streaming services (Spotify/Tidal) for syncing or playing tracks
  • UI/UX can be confusing, contributing to a less smooth user experience

Even though I paid $19.99 for a year of premium, the “change key” feature doesn’t work which was the whole reason why I got the app Update: customer support helped me figure out how to change the key and it works great so I upped my review from 1 to 4 stars. I would do 5 except the UI is confusing and the UX is kind of bad because of that.

I use Capo on both Mac and iPad to take apart songs and guitar breaks for students and band mates alike. It lets me get recordings in tune for headache-free practice sessions.

I take a lot of my demos into this app to set the correct tempo. It’s a great tool, and it’s amazing how the voice does not distort. Highly recommended
