User Reviews

Review consensus: Dragon Quest VIII on iOS is loved for its core RPG charm and open-world appeal, and the HD visuals are praised. However, the mobile port is hampered by missing features and stability issues: no controller support, no voice acting or orchestral audio, a clunky UI, and persistent bugs that cause crashes and freezes (especially during saves). Orientation is limited to landscape, and some content from the original (e.g., Dragon Soul) is missing. Fans hope for updates and fixes, including external audio support and better controls.
Pros
  • Beloved Dragon Quest VIII experience with a strong story and open-world feel.
  • HD remake visuals look great and overall graphical quality is improved.
  • Mobile-friendly controls that work well for one-handed play.
  • Ongoing updates and continued development from the team.
Cons
  • No controller support.
  • No voice acting and missing orchestral music.
  • Frequent crashes and freezes, especially around saving and battles.
  • Orientation is limited to landscape (no portrait mode).
  • UI feels clunky and some content/features from the original are missing.

This is a localization of the Japanese port of Dragon Quest VIII, so it lacks the fluff that Americans (and Europeans?) got when that was localized. It's a gorgeous game, it sounds beautiful, and it’s just a joy to play. I’m playing it all over again in 2026 and it somehow has aged like fine wine. There are no micro transactions, no stamina bars, none of that. You just play at your own pace and go on a meaningful adventure. I actually appreciate the one handed control scheme and am surprised that I felt differently years ago. Perhaps it’s because I’m playing on a bigger phone now, but it feels just right to me now. I can also have lunch and play or sneak in a quick battle while I wait for something else. The other Dragon Quest mainline games are great on iOS but I still appreciate how modern this one feels even today. I wonder how a mobile port of Dragon Quest XI would look like… In any case, I highly recommend this game!!
