hearEQ: Ear training for EQ Apple

hearEQ: Ear training for EQ

For musicians and engineers

Features & Capabilities

hearEQ builds your EQ skills to professional levels using custom ear-training exercises created from your favorite songs. It uses a standard 10-band or optional 30-band EQ to train you by playing a track with a subtle EQ change and asking you to identify what changed. Ten questions, ten frequencies, and a score help you measure progress—perfect for on-the-go practice for musicians and sound engineers.

The app ships with built-in practice tracks and lets you train with your own music on your device (subject to DRM limitations). A 30-band EQ is available via in-app purchase, and DRM-protected or cloud tracks may not be processed. For full details, see the terms of use linked on the site.

User Reviews

Users praise hearEQ for its intuitive design, effective ear training, and using their own music. They value the ability to practice boosts/cuts and report real improvements. Repeated downsides include inconsistent Apple Music compatibility, stability issues at launch, and the lack of a Mac/PC version. Some also dislike feature gating and want broader import/streaming options.
Pros
  • Supports training with your own music library, which many users find highly valuable for relevant practice.
  • Effective ear training with boosts and cuts quizzes, praised for accuracy and learning impact.
  • Great value for money; users feel the price is worth the benefits for serious mixing.
  • Elegant, intuitive UI/UX that makes the app easy to use and engaging.
  • Notable improvement in users' hearing and mixing skills; widely recommended by professionals in reviews.
Cons
  • Apple Music/library compatibility issues prevent playing or importing most tracks; only a few show up.
  • App sometimes crashes on launch or while using, making it unreliable until fixed.
  • No Mac/PC version and limited cross-platform support; users want desktop access and easier file import.
  • Advanced EQ tools (pink noise) and other features are gated behind additional purchases, making some feel the price isn’t all-inclusive.
  • Requests for more features and integrations (playlist progression, Spotify access, iCloud/Files import) indicate gaps in customization.
