Features & Capabilities

Symmetrain is an IGF 2014 Student Showcase winner. It’s a fast-paced symmetry puzzle where you choose your train, spot all differences as you travel from station to station, and race to finish before delays pull your progress off-screen. Mistakes slow or erase your train, so quick reactions and precise timing matter. An emergency brake helps you navigate tricky passages, while a memorable guitar soundtrack and hand-drawn visuals set the mood.

With dynamic generated challenges and eight unlockable trains—each with its own speed and route—the game stays fresh from run to run. It’s designed for players of all ages: beginners and kids can enjoy easy trains, while faster options provide longer, more challenging sessions as you improve. It also includes iCloud and Game Center support for cloud saves and friendly high-score competition, and PocketGamer praised its ingenious concept and responsive controls.

User Reviews

Symmetrain is praised for its calming mood, standout visuals, and addictive short-session play. Reviewers repeatedly note the serene music and unique art as strengths, along with a rewarding progression. Common downsides across multiple reviews are iOS compatibility and device support, overly fast train speeds with limited pacing control, and occasional control responsiveness issues. Overall, it’s a beautiful, original game that shines in mood and concept, but would benefit from updates to address performance, speed balance, and input reliability.
Pros
  • Calming, atmospheric soundtrack paired with charming visuals
  • Unique, artful visuals and an original concept
  • Addictive and highly replayable gameplay with a satisfying challenge
  • Great for short play sessions or downtime
  • Easy to pick up and learn with simple controls
Cons
  • IOS compatibility and device support problems (not working on newer iOS versions and some devices)
  • Trains speed up too fast, making pacing and planning difficult for many players
  • Control responsiveness and tapping accuracy can be inconsistent (hit detection issues)
  • Occasional platform/display issues on certain devices (e.g., XS Max height support)

This is a cool game when you have a few minutes of down time. It starts relaxing and gets very difficult to where you can’t keep up, but you want to keep trying again to see if you can get a bit further. For the good price and no ads or IAP, it’s a good deal for a game you can play a few minutes here and there. And the art is very cool. Totally worth the download.

This is not the kind of game I usually play. i.e. play ‘til you die. But I love trains, and the game is very well done. However you can’t really train harder; there needs to be a training run that allows you an extended run at a given speed.

I'm very much not a gamer* and one thing that irritates me no end is not knowing HOW the game works. Is it obvious to most of you what controls mean and how to move around games? It's not to me therefore you can't understand how happy I am to see explicit instructions. * I own scores of game apps but can't figure out so many except adorable simple (often Japanese) cat games, geography and vexillology ones.
