Features & Capabilities

HRV4Training is the first scientifically validated HRV app, delivering HRV-based insights to quantify stress, balance training, and improve performance. It measures HRV using your phone’s camera (no chest strap required) and also works with Apple Watch, Oura Ring, and Bluetooth SMART sensors. The app tracks day-to-day HRV changes in response to stressors and long-term multi-parameter trends to reveal the bigger picture. It correlates physiological measurements with user annotations and provides training-load analysis, readiness to perform, and injury-risk indicators. VO2max estimation for runners, linked to Strava or TrainingPeaks, is supported along with Training Polarization (80/20) and lactate-threshold estimation, plus weekly and monthly progress summaries. All data is processed in-app for privacy and quick, actionable interpretation, with options to export or back up.

Additional features include TAGS for sleep, energy, muscle fatigue, stress, and other factors that influence physiological stress; data export via email or Dropbox; Health app integration; a configurable test (1, 3, or 5 minutes); live PPG signal view for signal quality; population summaries and comparisons; and recovery points. HRV4Training requires an account to back up data and does not provide medical advice; it is intended for informational purposes only. User Reviews

HRV4Training is valued for reliable morning HRV readings and long-term tracking, with good cross-device compatibility and perceived value. However, many users report serious reliability issues (crashes, updates), connectivity problems with wearables and data sources, camera-based reading challenges, and pricing/refund frustrations. Overall, the concept is solid for daily resilience monitoring, but execution and support quality need improvement to meet athletes’ expectations.
Pros
  • Morning HRV readings are reliable and useful for tracking training load; the app is simple, consistent, and actionable.
  • Good value for money and not a subscription; long-time users report that readings are reliable and the app is worth the price.
  • Works with other devices (e.g., Oura ring, Apple Watch) and provides readings comparable to chest-strap measurements.
  • Useful for resting HRV tracking and daily monitoring, helping predict how you’ll feel and adjust training.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability; the app crashes often, won’t start, or resets during use.
  • Ongoing connectivity/sync issues with wearables and data sources (Oura, TrainingPeaks, Apple Health) that prevent pulling or sending data.
  • Camera-based readings can be unreliable due to finger placement and lens setup; users report awkward positioning to get a reading.
  • Pricing and refund frustrations: reports of hidden costs (TrainingPeaks sync fee) and difficulties obtaining refunds; value perception affected.
  • Update-related bugs and usability friction: crashes after updates, login/out issues, and registration/login hurdles.
Recent reviews
The interface is mid. I was fine paying the 10 bucks for the app but not disclosed in the purchase is you have to pay another 50 bucks every year just to sync to TrainingPeaks! that’s absurd and total rip off.

Only successful tested once for only one minute. Never again it always stop before completing one minute testing. Waste money and time. Apple should refund me for selling me a product that does not work.

I typically end up taking 3 - 5 measurements each morning. Heart rate varies a couple of beats measurement to measurement (sometimes more), but the bigger issue is HRV variation. Today my first measurement was above my normal range, second and third were in the normal range, and the fourth was below normal range. In all cases, signal quality was optimal, so something is off. I’m better off ignoring it and just relying on how I feel.
