GripSense passively tracks grip strength while you brush, guides a two-minute session with quadrant reminders, and includes a squeeze test to set your baseline."
GripSense is the companion app for the GripSense smart toothbrush. The toothbrush is designed for people who have difficulty maintaining a secure grip while brushing, including people with arthritis, Parkinson's disease, other motor impairments, or age-related loss of grip strength. It can also be used by caregivers and occupational therapists who want to monitor brushing performance.
The GripSense toothbrush uses built-in force-sensitive resistors to measure how firmly it is being held. That data is sent to this app over Bluetooth Low Energy, where it is displayed and recorded.
Features:
Real-time grip strength tracking. While you brush, the app shows your current grip pressure as a live sensor value and categorizes it as Comfort, Weak, or Excessive, so you can see at a glance whether your grip is in a comfortable range.
Bluetooth connection. Scan for your GripSense toothbrush and connect to it directly from the app. The app shows whether a connection is active and whether it is currently receiving data.
Guided brushing session. A two-minute timer structures each brushing session, with reminders roughly every 30 seconds to move to the next quadrant of your mouth. The toothbrush itself also signals each reminder with its own LED and buzzer, in addition to the app notification, so you do not need to be looking at your phone to follow along.
Squeeze test. A separate, short test you can run to establish your baseline maximum grip strength. The app uses your last 7 recorded squeeze tests to calculate this baseline.
Brushing baseline. Alongside the squeeze test, the app builds a picture of your normal brushing grip from your last 7 valid sessions, so it can show you how a given session compares to your usual grip. Sessions under 20 seconds are not counted toward this baseline.
Session history and reports. After each brushing session, see a breakdown of how much time you spent in the Comfort, Weak, and Excessive zones, along with a graph of your grip strength throughout the session. Squeeze test results are tracked the same way, with a graph of your grip strength for each test. Across sessions, these graphs show the trend in your grip strength over time, so you can see whether it is improving or declining. Together, they form a report you can bring to a doctor or occupational therapist.
Account sign-in. Create an account to save your brushing and squeeze test data so it is available across sessions.
Data and privacy: brushing and squeeze test data is stored locally on your device. It is not sent to any cloud server.
Requirements: an iPhone with Bluetooth enabled, and a GripSense toothbrush. The app does not function without the toothbrush, since all grip data comes from its sensors.
