Features & Capabilities

No account. Your diary stays on your phone. Scientifically proven. Describe a meal in words or photograph it, and FreeCals works out the numbers.

FreeCals is a calorie tracker. There is no account to create, and your diary is stored on your phone.

LOGGING A MEAL

Scan a barcode and the packaged product comes back from Open Food Facts. Search by name and two databases answer: Open Food Facts for packaged products, USDA FoodData Central for generic foods like chicken breast or rolled oats.

When neither has what you ate, describe it. Type or dictate "a bowl of porridge with 200 ml milk, a banana and a flat white" and FreeCals reads it into separate items with portions. Photograph the plate instead if that is quicker, or photograph a printed nutrition label and the numbers are read off it on your device.

Paste a recipe URL or photograph a recipe and it becomes an ingredient list you can log a portion of, with a shopping list if you want one.

WEIGHT AND TARGETS

Log your weight and FreeCals follows the trend rather than the daily noise. From what you logged and how your weight actually moved it works out what you burn, and adjusts your target to match. Body measurements too.

THE DAY AND THE WEEK

23 nutrients, not only the three macros. Water. A fasting timer. Supplements. Meals planned a day ahead. A score for the day and for the week, built from your own figures alone and able to show you exactly what it is made of.

Ask a question about your own numbers in plain language and get an answer with your last four weeks in front of it.

WATCH, WIDGETS, LIVE ACTIVITIES

An Apple Watch app for calories left, water, quick add, weight and fasting, with complications. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets. A Live Activity for a running fast and for the calories you have left today.

APPLE HEALTH

Two-way, each direction with its own switch, off until you turn it on.

YOUR DATA

The diary lives on the device. Export all of it as JSON and the diary as CSV whenever you want, and import it back. Deleting the app deletes the data.

Barcode lookups, searches, descriptions, photos and questions go to the FreeCals backend and on to Open Food Facts, USDA FoodData Central or OpenAI to be answered. They carry no account, no device identifier and no cookies. What comes back is the answer.

AI answers are estimates, and the app labels them as estimates. FreeCals is a tracking tool, not a medical device, and gives no medical advice.

Product data from Open Food Facts, licensed under the Open Database License. Generic foods from USDA FoodData Central, published by the US Department of Agriculture and in the public domain.

English and German.
