NOTHING IS TIMED

There is no clock to lose to. No countdown, no streak to break, no score, no league table. Answer in four seconds or four minutes and it is worth exactly the same.

If you put the phone down for fifteen seconds, your companion stops paying attention and waits. That is the only thing in the app that notices time passing, and nothing is lost when it does.

THE WRONG ANSWERS ARE THE POINT

Most kana apps show you three random characters next to the right one. Ruling out three shapes you have never seen is not reading.

Mojiya draws every wrong option from a confusion set: one character that looks like the answer, one that sounds like it, one from the same row. さ against き. シ against ツ. That is the pair you actually mix up at two in the morning, so that is the pair you get asked.

Get it wrong and the screen waits. It tells you what the character was and why the one you picked is different, and it does not move on until you have read it.

IT GETS HARDER AS YOU GET BETTER

A lesson starts with six options. Answer well over a stretch and it opens to eight. Have a rough hour and it settles back to four and gives you more room to make mistakes in.

You never see a rank or a level for this. It is not a score. It is just a question that fits.

208 CHARACTERS, AND YOU CAN SEE ALL OF THEM

46 basic, 25 with dakuten and handakuten, 33 combined, in each of the two scripts. The full gojūon chart is one tap from the home screen and shows you exactly which rows are holding and which are not.

Home shows one stage at a time, so the number in front of you is the row you are on rather than a total you are nowhere near.

EVERY CHARACTER IS SPOKEN

Two voices, one female and one male, recorded rather than synthesised. Choose either, replay as often as you like. Listening questions play the sound and ask for the character.

WHAT YOU KEEP

Spaced repetition puts each character on its own schedule, so the ones you find hard come back sooner and the ones you have got come back later. Master a whole row and words open up: すし, ねこ, characters you can now actually read rather than recognise.

Test yourself whenever you want. Choose what it covers, how long it is, whether you tap an answer or type it, and how many options you get.

THE ARRANGEMENT

Every lesson is free. All 208 characters, both scripts, every word, both voices. That is not a trial.

Ads pay for it. If you would rather not see them, one purchase turns them off for good and opens every companion and colour. Nothing that teaches you anything is ever behind it.

Yearly, or one payment for life. Your store handles the money and you cancel a yearly plan from your own account settings, never from us.

No account. No sign-in. No email address. Your progress lives on your phone and never leaves it. Every lesson works with the plane on.

Mojiya without ads is sold as a yearly auto-renewing subscription, or a one-off Lifetime payment. A yearly plan renews at the end of each year unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before it ends, in your App Store account settings.
