Momo teaches you to read Japanese, starting from the very first character.

Most apps hand you a pile of flashcards and wish you luck. Momo is a path: hiragana, then katakana, then real words. Sixty-one lessons, in order, each one building on the last. Modules stay locked until you pass the exam, and nothing you have learned is left to rot.

WHAT YOU LEARN

• All 107 hiragana and all 107 katakana, with stroke-order diagrams to get your hand moving
• 787 words across 49 themed lessons: greetings, family, food, the body, getting around town
• 495 kanji, met inside real words rather than drilled in isolation, with furigana you can switch off when you are ready

HOW IT WORKS

• Every item is scheduled by FSRS, so reviews arrive just before you would forget
• Every word and kana is spoken aloud, pre-rendered so it plays instantly and offline
• Furigana and romaji are toggles, not crutches you are stuck with
• A searchable dictionary of 23,334 words, for when curiosity strikes mid-lesson

WHAT MOMO DOES NOT DO

• No account needed. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to remember.
• No ads. Nothing blinks, nothing interrupts a lesson.
• No internet needed. Lessons, audio and dictionary all live on your phone, so you can study on the Underground.
• Your progress stays on your device. We count finished sessions and crashes, and you can switch both off in Settings.

Three modules are live today. N4 and beyond are in progress: Momo ships the parts that are finished rather than five half-built ones.
