Aloud AAC

Aloud is a talking aid for adults who lost their speech — after a stroke, with ALS or Parkinson's, or after head and neck cancer. It is not a children's symbol board. It is built for a person who still has their own thoughts and their own vocabulary, and needs to be understood at a doctor's desk, at a pharmacy counter, or across a kitchen table.

HOW IT WORKS

Tap a few word tiles — "help pain", "water cold", "call daughter" — then tap "Make a sentence". The phone proposes up to three complete sentences, built on the device by Apple's on-device models. You tap the one you meant, and only then is it spoken. Nothing is ever spoken automatically. The app proposes; you decide.

If none of the sentences is right, "Say my words" is always there: it speaks the exact words you tapped, word for word, with no AI involved. And whenever the phone is speaking, a single full-width Stop control is on screen — reachable by touch, by keyboard, and through VoiceOver, Switch Control and Assistive Access.

Every proposed sentence also passes through a set of on-device checks before you see it, written to catch changed meanings — for example, a dropped "not". The final safeguard is structural: the app never speaks a sentence you did not explicitly choose.

PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE

• No network. The app's code makes no network requests. It works fully in airplane mode.

WITHOUT AI, IT STILL WORKS

The three generated sentences need Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later). On other supported iPhones, a built-in rule-based expander offers sentence options instead, and everything else works the same. Speaking is never metered and is never switched off.

FREE, WITH NOTHING HELD BACK

Aloud is free. Every feature is included. There is no subscription, no account, and no cap on speaking — a person's voice is not something to meter.

FOR FAMILIES AND CLINICIANS

An optional usage log — off by default, always visible when on — supports a communication trial, with a report you export yourself from the share sheet. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.
