It now lets you connect your ElevenLabs account for voice cloning and prompt-based voice design, and also adds Apple Personal Voice support. The core function is free, and you can install Spoken on a phone or tablet to start communicating right away with natural-sounding voices.

Key features include personalized next-word predictions, multiple input methods (type, draw, or handwrite to talk), a wide selection of lifelike voices, saved phrases for quick access, large on-screen text, and a customizable alert to grab attention. Some features require Spoken Premium, with a complimentary trial after download. Spoken continues to evolve based on user feedback.

User Reviews

Overall, reviews praise Spoken for its customization (saved phrases) and voice options, plus its usefulness for nonverbal people and those who can’t speak. Many find it intuitive and life-changing in real situations. The dominant concerns are the cost and paywall model (subscription-only with few one-time options), which many deem unaffordable or exploitative. Accessibility gaps for screen readers and braille users, plus UI issues (hard-to-find phrases, keyboard blocking view) and occasional speech glitches reduce usability. Some users note slow/unstable prediction but others still find it valuable despite flaws.
Pros
  • Customizable with saved phrases
  • Wide range of voices and generally good voice quality
  • Intuitive and user-friendly, easy to set up for nonverbal users
  • Life-saving and highly useful for people who can’t speak (e.g., post-surgery, aphasia, autism)
  • Baseline features are free or usable without an upfront subscription
Cons
  • Expensive subscription model; core features behind paywall and few one-time purchase options
  • Accessibility gaps for visually impaired users (VoiceOver labeling) and braille display issues
  • UI/phrase organization problems making it hard to find phrases; limited option to categorize saved phrases
  • Speech output glitches and inconsistencies (words cut off, output reliability)
  • Slow or unreliable predictive text; keyboard frequently blocks the view; occasional offline issues

I used this app extensively and all “premium” functionality became paywalled. What little functionality was there is already less functional than the stock iOS live speech functionality.

Had a very stressful nonstop screaming week and strained my neck muscles so was given instructions to not talk for atleast 3 days and this app makes it feel like I never stopped love it!
