FULL SUN, HERE Tell Gardenory which way a bed faces, how big it is, and what stands near it. It computes the light that bed really receives, month by month — and it does not simply add up hours. Four hours of morning light on an east-facing bed carries roughly half the energy of four midday hours on a south-facing one, which is exactly why generic advice recommends tomatoes for beds that cannot ripen them.

THE SUN RIBBON Watch the sun travel over your bed in plan view, with the shadow of your fence or maple sweeping across it. Drag through the day, or through the year.

IDENTIFY A PLANT, HONESTLY Photograph a plant and Gardenory commits to an answer or tells you plainly that it is not sure. It will happily give you the genus rather than invent a species, it never guesses a variety from a photo — no photograph can separate one tomato cultivar from another — and it shows no accuracy percentage, because a number reads as certainty. It never tells you whether something is safe to eat.

FOUR ANSWERS, NOT ONE ZONE Your hardiness zone describes winter cold and nothing else. Gardenory gives you winter minimum, summer heat days, season length and per-bed light as four separate answers, and says out loud what the zone cannot tell you.

FROST AS A RANGE Published frost dates are probabilities, not deadlines. You get an even-money date and a safe date about a fortnight apart, and your own logged frosts replace the estimate over time.
