Some rooms are too loud to sleep in. Some are too quiet, which is worse. Patter fills either one with seventeen ambient sounds, mixed at whatever levels you like.

Rain on its own wears thin after an hour. Put a coffee shop under it, drop the fire to about fifteen percent, add brown noise when the room next door gets loud. Every sound has its own switch and its own slider, so the mix is yours rather than a preset someone else picked.

Then lock the screen and forget it. Patter keeps playing, and the lock screen steps through the presets without you opening anything. Nothing to check later, no streak to keep, and no session length to configure. It plays at the levels you set until you turn it off, and it remembers where you left it.

ON YOUR WRIST The Apple Watch app is a player, not a remote. All seventeen sounds live on the watch itself, so you can leave the phone at home and still have the mix on a walk or at bedtime. The Digital Crown sets the volume. Double Tap plays and pauses. A sleep timer from fifteen to ninety minutes that ends in a slow fade rather than a hard stop. One tap brings over whatever your iPhone is already playing.

WHAT YOU GET Seventeen sounds that all play at once, each with its own slider. Eight presets for when you don't feel like building a mix. Playback from the lock screen and Control Center, with the presets on the previous and next buttons. Audio that keeps going in the background while you use everything else. The same purchase runs on iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.

THE CRAFT The rain is fat drops on a window, recorded from inside. The coffee shop is one small quiet cafe rather than a crowd loop. Every recording is professional field audio, cut and looped by hand, and the white, pink and brown noise is generated live instead of played back, so there is no loop in it to find. Nothing snaps on either: every sound gets an equal-power fade going in and coming out. The recorded loops have no audible seam, so rain can run all night without you finding the join. A phone call pauses Patter and it comes back on its own afterwards. Unplugging your headphones pauses it instead of surprising the room.

ONE PURCHASE, EVERY DEVICE The Mac version is a menu bar app rather than a window, the iPad runs the same mixer, and the watch app stands on its own. They are all the one purchase, and Family Sharing works, so up to six people in your family get all of it too.

WHAT PATTER DOESN'T DO No subscription. One payment and the seventeen sounds are yours for good. No network access at all. Not limited access, not access you can revoke: Patter cannot open an internet connection, so it collects nothing about you. Every sound ships inside the app and works on a plane.

THE FINE PRINT Every slider and switch carries a VoiceOver label. Space plays and pauses on a hardware keyboard. Native Swift and SwiftUI. Requires iOS 16 or later. The watch app needs watchOS 11 and plays to Bluetooth headphones, or to the watch speaker on newer models.
