Canadian hazard awareness
Wildfires, evacuations, weather alerts, floods — and now earthquakes. Live Canadian open data for the places you care about. Independent, free, and privacy-first.
Nearcast helps you stay aware of hazards near the places you care about across Canada — wildfires, evacuations, earthquakes, weather alerts, flood advisories, air quality (AQHI), fire weather, and winter road conditions — using publicly available open data.
Choose your season focus: Wildfire, Winter, or Auto. Wildfire mode leads with fires, evacuations, AQHI, and fire weather. Winter mode leads with weather alerts, provincial road advisories, rain–snow forecasts, and highway cameras. Year-round hazards — weather alerts, flood advisories, earthquakes, evacuations — stay visible in both modes.
WHAT NEARCAST DOES
• See active wildfires and nearby evacuations on a live map
• Track recent earthquakes across Canada in a dedicated Quakes tab — magnitude, depth, distance from your places, and official Earthquakes Canada details
• Read live ECCC weather alerts (warnings, watches, statements) for your regions
• Follow flood advisories in BC (River Forecast Centre) and Québec (Vigilance), with basin maps and levels (High Streamflow, Flood Watch, Flood Warning)
• Follow provincial road advisories, closures, and winter driving conditions (DriveBC, 511 Alberta, Ontario 511)
• View highway camera stills near advisories and your saved places
• Track Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) in your selected regions
• Check fire-weather context (FWI) near your saved places
• See local rain, snow, and wind forecasts for each saved place
• Save home, family, or travel spots and watch a radius around them
• Get optional local phone alerts when a warning, flood watch, fire, evacuation, or significant earthquake affects a saved place — including periodic background checks when iOS allows
• Share a place update with family via Messages or Mail
IMPORTANT
Nearcast is independent and unofficial. It is not affiliated with the Government of Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Natural Resources Canada, provincial wildfire or transportation agencies, or any emergency service. It does not issue or replace Alert Ready / wireless emergency alerts. Weather alert, flood advisory, and earthquake content comes from official public data feeds and updates when the app refreshes — it is not real-time push delivery. Earthquake information is post-event, never early warning. Alert Ready remains Canada's official emergency channel.
In an emergency, call 9-1-1. Always follow local authorities and official alert systems.
COVERAGE NOTES
• Wildfires and AQHI: broader Canadian open-data coverage
• Earthquakes: national Earthquakes Canada (NRCan) catalog, plus nearby US border-zone events (Pacific Northwest, major Alaska, New England) when shaking could reach Canada
• Weather alerts: national ECCC feed, shown in both season modes
• Flood advisories: British Columbia (River Forecast Centre) and Québec (Vigilance), year-round including spring freshet
• Road advisories: live feeds for BC, Alberta, and Ontario; official 511 portals linked for other regions
• Highway cameras: BC, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec
• Evacuation polygons: currently strongest for British Columbia (includes flood and avalanche orders, shown in every season)
• Notifications are local and evaluated when the app refreshes — including periodic background refresh when iOS allows — not guaranteed background emergency delivery
• An empty list never means all clear — always confirm with official sources
Privacy-first: saved places, regions, and preferences stay on your device. Nearcast does not continuously track your live GPS.
