ATC Radio Trainer for Pilots
An ATC radio trainer for student pilots: full FAA/ICAO phraseology, realistic audio on every phrase, and simulated radio noise for tough-listening practice.
The popular iOS app ATC Radio Trainer now comes to the Mac. Study on your phone when you're out and about, then settle in for focused, distraction-free practice on the desktop. Buy Pro on either iOS or Mac and it unlocks on both with the same Apple ID.
Practical radio training for the everyday student pilot has long been in short supply. Practice the phraseology with audio and realistic radio-noise, then practice Readback with a Push-to-Talk workflow and automatic answer checking, to master "radio communications," one of the toughest gatekeepers early in pilot training. Even native English speakers struggle here, because radio phraseology and pronunciation differ from ordinary English, so it's valuable for native and non-native speakers alike.
Note: This app is for training and study only. It is not for real-world operations, navigation, clearance prediction, weather/NOTAM briefing, or operational decision-making.
WHAT YOU GET
- 162 standard FAA/ICAO phrases across 25 phases/categories: taxi, takeoff, cruise (controlled airspace), approach, landing, emergencies, go-arounds, diversion/reporting.
- Listen mode: 16 full-flight scenarios, played end to end from ATIS through taxi, takeoff, cruise, and landing.
- Hands-on practice: Listen & Repeat, spoken readback (scored on-device), multiple choice, and type-to-readback, plus a review deck.
- Taxi training: read the clearance while viewing the airport diagram, then read it back tap by tap (including hold short and runway crossings) - now for both FAA and ICAO. 60 airports (30 FAA with official diagrams + 30 ICAO rendered from open data), with FAA/ICAO region and VFR/IFR selection in Settings.
- Reference: NATO phonetic alphabet (26 letters), number-reading rules (11), METAR/TAF decoder (7 explained fields), ATC glossary (41 terms), airport signs, nighttime airport lighting, 49 vocabulary flashcards, FAA vs. ICAO differences, more.
- Airport database: 288 airports across 4 countries (US 201 / UK 33 / Japan 27 / Australia 27), with real runways and frequencies from open data (confirm with official sources before flight).
- High-quality audio plus 6 radio-noise environments (Clear / Radio / Weak Signal / Cockpit / Busy / Chaos).
- 2 modes, FAA (US) and ICAO, with switchable units (inHg / hPa).
- 8 languages (Japanese, English, Korean, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese). UI and explanations are localized; the radio phrases stay in English so you train them for real.
