Features & Capabilities

Photograph each character of the Heart Sutra on your daily walk. Signs, place names, temple stones — characters are everywhere. Your walk becomes a pilgrimage.

As you walk through the city, characters appear everywhere. A shop sign, a street name, the shadow of a branch, the grain of a stone wall — the world is full of letters waiting to be found.

Sutra Walk is a new way to practice shakyo — the ancient art of copying Buddhist sutras — through photography. One character at a time, using the world around you.

■ How It Works

The app shows you one character from a sutra at a time. Find something that looks like that character, and photograph it.

For example: · A cloud formation resembling "心" (heart/mind) · A paving stone echoing "無" (emptiness) · A shop sign carrying the character you need

There are no wrong answers. If it looks like the character to you, it is correct. One photograph at a time, your sutra comes to life.

■ A Modern Pilgrimage

In Japan, goshuin-cho are notebooks filled with hand-stamped seals collected at temples — a record of pilgrimage.

Sutra Walk is a goshuin-cho for the modern city. Temple gates, street signs, station names, park stones — characters exist everywhere. Your pilgrimage can begin anywhere.

Each character you find becomes your own unique mark. When you finish, you hold a record of both a sutra and a walk.

■ Sutras Included

[Enmei Jikku Kannon Sutra] Beginner · Free Just 10 characters. A gentle introduction, perfect for first-timers.

[Heart Sutra] Intermediate 262 characters. Japan's most beloved sutra, known for "form is emptiness, emptiness is form."

[Kannon Sutra] Advanced A longer journey through the words of Kannon Bodhisattva.

■ Who This Is For

· Anyone who wants a new reason to go for a walk · People interested in mindfulness or meditation · Those curious about Buddhism or Japanese culture · Photography lovers who want walks with purpose · Goshuin collectors and temple visitors · Parents looking for a mindful activity with children

■ About Shakyo

Shakyo is the practice of hand-copying Buddhist scriptures, one character at a time — a tradition in Japan since the Nara period (710–794 CE). The act of writing was itself a form of prayer.

In Sutra Walk, writing becomes photographing. No brush required. No temple needed. Your neighborhood becomes sacred ground.

■ FAQ

Q: Where should I take photos? A: Anywhere. Shop signs, street names, cloud shapes, stone textures, tree shadows. If it looks like the character to you, photograph it.

Q: Do I need to know about Buddhism? A: Not at all. The joy of finding the shape comes first; meaning follows. Readings and explanations are available in the app.

Q: How much can I complete in one walk? A: As much as you like. The Enmei Jikku Kannon Sutra has just 10 characters — completable on a short stroll.

Q: Do my photos need to be good? A: No. What matters is that you found the character.

Q: Can I use it indoors? A: Yes. Book covers, wall textures, fabric patterns — characters exist inside too.

Q: Can children join in? A: "Where's that character hiding?" is a natural game for a family walk.

■ At Your Own Pace

Indoors or outdoors. One character a day, or whenever you feel like it.

You might start noticing signs you've walked past a hundred times. You might look up at the sky more often.

A quiet moment, always within reach.
