ZeusOSA

ZeusOSA is a non-implantable, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) medical device designed to be worn under the chin to alleviate symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and improve sleep-disordered breathing. The device is intended for use by adult patients in the home environment during sleep. The lightweight, U-shaped silicone pad incorporates a disposable adhesive hydrogel electrode that delivers low-level transcutaneous electrical stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve through the skin.

Stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve activates the genioglossus muscle, helping to maintain upper airway patency during sleep. Regular application of electrical stimulation promote genioglossus muscle activity, reducing the risk of throat vibrations and upper airway narrowing or collapse that can lead to snoring or episodes of apnoea and hypopnoea.

The device is equipped with two buttons and contains an internal rechargeable battery. It provides ten different settings for the intensity of the electrical impulse, allowing for personalisation to meet individual user preferences. Trial participants can customise the stimulation intensity using the ‘+’ and ‘-’ buttons, resulting in a total of ten settings available. The built-in firmware of the ZeusOSA enables users to select their desired stimulation levels and incorporates a 20-minute delay to facilitate a smooth transition into sleep before stimulation commences.

The ZeusOSA charger features a Bluetooth chip that allows access to usage data while the device is charging. The medical device cannot be worn during this time because it is charged via a USB cable (provided by the manufacturer) connected to a charging unit that engages pins on the underside of the device.
