Allergen & Gluten Label Scan
Scan any food's barcode and instantly see if it's safe for your celiac or food-allergy kids—trace and shared-facility warnings included. Built by allergy parents.
SafePantry is the allergen-first scanner built by allergy parents, for allergy parents. Scan any product and see at a glance whether it's safe for every kid in your family — including the trace warnings, shared-equipment statements, and ambiguous ingredients that other scanner apps quietly ignore.
WHY WE BUILT IT
Every existing barcode scanner is designed for general health-conscious shoppers. Allergy and celiac families have a different problem: a single missed "may contain peanut" warning is an emergency. SafePantry treats that risk as the headline, not an afterthought.
WHAT IT DOES
• Scan a barcode with your iPhone's camera. SafePantry looks up the product in the public Open Food Facts database and checks the ingredients against every kid in your family.
• Each kid gets their own profile — name, allergens, severity, EpiPen status, emergency notes. Add as many as you need.
• Every scan returns a clear green / yellow / red verdict per kid, with a plain-English explanation of every flagged ingredient.
• Trace warnings ("may contain", "shared facility", "manufactured in plant that processes") are surfaced, not hidden. You decide whether to treat traces as caution or as full unsafe — per-kid, per-allergen.
• Negation phrases like "peanut-free facility" and "contains no dairy" are recognised, so legitimately safe products aren't false-flagged.
WHEN THE PRODUCT ISN'T IN THE DATABASE
US grocery coverage in Open Food Facts is about 60-70%. When a barcode misses, SafePantry hands you a label-capture flow: paste or photograph the ingredient list, and the same allergen engine analyses it on your device. If you opt in, your reading gets contributed back to the public database so the next family scanning the same product gets a result instantly.
DESIGNED FOR THE REAL WORLD
• Apple Watch app: glance at the family's allergen profiles and the verdict of your last scan from your wrist.
• Watch face complication: at-a-glance verdict colour in any compatible complication slot.
• Live Activity + Dynamic Island: keep your iPhone in your pocket while shopping; the verdict appears on the Lock Screen.
• Siri & Shortcuts: "Scan with SafePantry" or "Look up a barcode with SafePantry" work hands-free.
• iCloud sync: family profiles sync between your own devices privately, end-to-end encrypted by Apple.
• Family share: a one-tap QR code or AirDrop link hands an allergen profile to a babysitter, grandparent, or co-parent.
YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS
• No analytics, no third-party SDKs, no advertising, no telemetry.
• Kid profiles and scan history live only on your iPhone (plus optional iCloud Private Database, which Apple encrypts end-to-end and SafePantry has no access to).
• When you scan a barcode, only the barcode digits leave the device. No device identifier, no profile data.
WHO IT'S FOR
• Parents of kids with food allergies (FALCPA top 9 plus gluten plus custom)
• Celiac families navigating cross-contamination risk
• Adults managing their own allergies who want a faster way to triage in-store
• Grandparents, babysitters, and caregivers who need a kid's allergen profile on their own phone
SAFEPANTRY IS COMMUNITY-POWERED
Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a non-profit crowdsourced database. Every time you scan an unlisted product and contribute the label back, the database gets better for every other allergy family using the app. Allergen tag corrections feed back the same way.
