WhatChanged – Folder Compare

File compare & diff checker

Features & Capabilities

Compare files, folders and text on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Spot changes, detect renames, use Safe Merge and verify with optional SHA-256 — originals stay unchanged.

WhatChanged helps you answer one question fast: what’s different?

Use one app across iPhone, iPad and Mac to compare two files, two folders or text and get a clear summary of changes.

On iPhone and iPad, start in the app or send two files from Files straight to WhatChanged. Perfect for backups, exports, cloud drives, builds, and any “did this copy match?” moment.

◼ How to use

• In the app

Open WhatChanged

Choose two files or two folders (Left and Right)

Tap Compare

• From the share sheet

In the Files app, or another app that can share files, select exactly two files

Tap Share → WhatChanged

The report opens in WhatChanged automatically

  Tip:
The extension is best for file-to-file compare. To compare folders, open the main app.

• Direct Text Compare

Open the Text tab

Paste or type text on both sides

Compare instantly, without selecting files first

• Text Diff tools

Open a text diff from Direct Text Compare, a supported text file, or a folder-pair text diff

Use Copy Diff to copy a unified-diff-style result as plain text

Use Find in Diff to search inside the current diff, move between matches, and highlight matching rows

Review compact Diff Summary badges for total changes, modified rows, added rows, and removed rows

Read cleaner results on iPhone and iPad, with polished layout and no-difference states

• Safe Merge

Run a folder comparison

Open Safe Merge Preview

Choose a rule: Newest, Oldest, Smallest (New), Smallest (Old), Biggest (New), or Biggest (Old)

Review the output folder and safety preview

Tap Merge Now to copy the selected results into a new output folder

WhatChanged keeps the original folders unchanged

Successful merges include a generated README with the compared folders, selected rule, copied items, counts, output location, and safety notes

• Improved text diff performance for long text comparisons and large replacement blocks

• Optional SHA-256 verification for content-level certainty, with caching for faster re-checks
