User Reviews

Reviews largely praise Sync Folders for incremental backups, ease of use, broad cross‑platform support, change previews, logging, and flexible sync options. However, users repeatedly flag reliability concerns: OS compatibility breaks on newer macOS versions, incomplete/erroneous syncing with large data sets, occasional freezes or crashes, and aggressive upsell prompts with unclear free-versus-Pro features. Overall, it can be very effective for daily syncing, but reliability across complex or large-scale tasks and OS updates remains a risk.
Pros
  • Incremental backups that copy only new or changed files, saving time.
  • Easy to use and beginner-friendly with a clean, intuitive UI.
  • Cross-platform support (macOS and iOS) and the ability to sync across local folders, iCloud, network drives, and external storage.
  • Detailed preview of changes before syncing, plus logging and conflict handling.
  • Flexible sync options (two-way, one-way, and mirror) enabling set-it-and-forget-it backups.
Cons
  • Compatibility issues with newer macOS versions (e.g., Tahoe 26.2, Ventura 13.1) leading to failures or broken syncing.
  • Incomplete or unreliable syncing for large datasets (first pass misses substantial data; results can be inconsistent).
  • Crashes or the app becoming unresponsive during use.
  • Upsell prompts and confusion over free vs Pro features (frequent prompts to buy Pro and misleading expectations for the free version).
Recent reviews
Sync Folders used to function effectively after the initial setup in earlier versions of macOS. However, in macOS Tahoe 26.2, we encounter persistent failures, even though the profiles previously worked seamlessly. For instance, we frequently encounter issues reading files in ~/Library, despite providing it with full disk access multiple times. Consequently, I’ve switched to Syncovery (which also has its own learning curve), but it has eliminated all read errors.

It’s a lifesaver for backups because it only copies the files that have actually changed which saves me so much time when moving stuff between my device and external drives.

Almost impossible to determine what it’s going to do and the CONSTANT opening of a browser and the App Store to get you to buy Pro (Which I may have done) are just too annoying to deal with. Deleted.
