Acute Care Triage

This app aids paramedics in making transportation decisions for patients with stroke or traumatic injury.

Acute Care Triage provides paramedics with transport advice on the type of hospital to which patients with suspected stroke or traumatic injury should be transported.

For patients with suspected stroke, the Stroke Triage modality compares the probability of good outcome for two transportation strategies: drive to the nearest general hospital or directly to an intervention center. The probabilities are estimated based on various parameters, including real-time position (GPS), hospital workflow times and the RACE score.

For trauma patients, the Trauma Triage modality is based on the predicted probability of severe injury and the clinical judgment of the paramedic, to determine whether a patient should be transported to a level 1 trauma center or to a regional hospital. The prediction is derived from prehospital data, such as age, vital signs, mechanism of injury, suspected injury region, and ambulance dispatch priority.

Based on these inputs, Acute Care Triage advises the preferred transport strategy for each individual patient to support timely and appropriate care. Access to the triage function is available to paramedics affiliated with participating ambulance services.
