Outgrowth is a sample-based instrument built collaboratively by Aqeel Aadam Sound and BlankFor.ms. Designed with creativity, flexibility, and performance in mind, Outgrowth provides unique, multifaceted ways to reimagine audio with your mouse or keyboard.

Outgrowth features five unique engines for processing samples:

Stem: A basic one-shot style player that repitches the sample
Retain: A granular stretching engine that sustains the sample indefinitely
Reflect: A looping algorithm that loops the sample at a consistent rate across all pitches
Radiate: An additive resynthesizer that maps each harmonic of the sample to a sine wave oscillator
Delve: A wavetable synthesizer in which the sample becomes the basis for a completely unique wavetable

Outgrowth also features five standout audio effects for shaping your sounds further:

Subvert: A unique shaper that flattens or inverts the sample’s volume
Submerge: A singular effect for adding dimensional realism to sample repitching
Strike: A dynamic control for adding an acoustic-like response to sample playback and performance
Ripple: A one-knob tape emulation handcrafted by BlankFor.ms that can be subtle, deconstructive, and anywhere in between
Smear: A pre-ADSR reverb for congealing notes and blurring boundaries between pitch and texture

It sounds good and it does have MIDI channel select but it just pops and clicks when I try to use it with my common audio interface, then it crashes. If it does start up it does not respond toMIDI or output audio through the Volt 2.

I love the overall sound and immediacy of this instrument. Creating custom multi-sample-based soundscapes is quick and easy. Unfortunately, preset management is very limited and the app doesn’t expose presets to the file system (either on the iPad or in iCloud). Deleting presets cause the plug-in to completely lock up nearly every time. If you create multiple presets using samples that happen to have the same file name they seem to overwrite the samples with matching names in older presets, completely corrupting them. I have run into a handful of other crashes, too, but not consistently enough to understand what is causing them. This app would easily be 5-stars if the bugs could get fixed and in-app preset management was improved. May-8 edit: the latest version that I see in the iPad App Store is 1.05 and I was already running that version when I ran into these issues. As a test, I quickly loaded one of my presets, saved it to another name (including the samples), and then tried to delete that new copy - the app completely locked up again.

Outgrowth is the fourth app by one of my favorite developers. Aqeel Aadam has a way of creating both beautiful sounding, and beautifully simple, complex instruments, effects and generators. Outgrowth is a continuation on this theme. It allows some incredible ways to manipulate sound, but without overwhelming you with menus or too many options. You can quickly tune in sample modulation in a visual manner, in a way that augments your ears. I don’t know how else to say it, but he just has a way of making really deep sound and rhythm manipulation extraordinarily easy to access. I know this app will grow with me as I spend more time with it and that makes me really happy. I place this high on my list of totally worthwhile iOS music apps to own.
