I keep coming back to Jot, *trying* to incorporate it into my workflow, but there's several hiccups that are counterproductive to Jot's goals of effortless thought-stream capture.
I'm hellbent on using Jot (or something like it) as a sort of Inbox / triage that feeds into a much more featureful Task app (i.e., TickTick, Reminders). I do *not* encourage Jot devs to try to make Jot a full-fledged Task app, but instead integrate with these other apps. I have zero intention of using *reminders* within Jot; IMO, that's better suited for a more full-fledged tool. Jot's value-add *would be* in making it effortless for an active mind to create bookmarks to return to.
Jot MCP is well-intented idea that *almost* allows me to create a bridge between TickTick and Jot using an LLM, I'd love to ask my LLM to move "migrate tasks from the Jot Inbox to TickTick", but Jot's MCP does not allow for deletion of tasks.
On MacOS, it *pains* me that Jot does not appear in the Share-sheet as it does on mobile. I'd like to use Jot to capture fleeting thoughts, as well as keep a reading-list of links, etc. Being able to right-click -> share to Jot on MacOS would be very valuable.
While Jot features some useful keyboard shortcuts on MacOS, they are not practical. I love being able to use voice dictation on my watch and phone, but on MacOS, I prefer use the keyboard (my wife would think I was mentally ill if I stayed up late talking to my laptop). That said, when I press the hotkey to create a new text note, I'm ripped me away from my full-screen app to a considerably large text-editor window. Yuck; that happened once and I disabled that shortcut. IMO, text-entry should drop-down from the notch like the voice-input elegantly does.
On that note, Jot's voice-note input descending from the notch is such a tease. There is no option to *click the notch* to create voice- or text-note. On MacOS, when a fleeting thought arrives, or I encounter a link I want to quickly save and move on, (1) I cannot use the share-sheet, (2) I cannot practically create a text note without being ripped away from my current screen, and (3) I don't want to use voice. On a laptop, talking alone is a form of context-switching I cannot afford; not to mention it's annoying to anyone around me. Thus, on MacOS, Jot is essentially worthless to me, except for it's lackluster MCP server.
Jot would also benefit from having its own URL scheme, e.g. "jot://…”, to facilitate use within custom / automated workflows. See TickTick’s URL scheme for an example. The specific use-case I have in mind here is integrating with PopClip, so I could highlight some text, click a button, and have it stored within Jot.
I also would like to set sort options per folder. I want my inbox sorted by creation date *ascending*, and my reading-list folder sorted by creation date *descending*.
TLDR; while Jot does what it needs to on mobile and watch, the lackluster experience on MacOS is what keeps Jot on the shelf for me. IMO,
MacOS should be the primary emphasis of development, with iOS and Watch apps being supplemental to a more featureful MacOS app, not the other way around. It seems the Jot devs haven't put too much thought into practical use on MacOS.
Things Jot does well:
- Watch complication for voice input
- iOS share-sheet to Jot's "save & extract feature"

This is a really nice app for capturing notes with some good organization capabilities as well. Apple Watch app works well and is the key piece for me. The interface is simple and direct, very easy to use.
