Reading With Monty

Reading with Monty is a phonics-based reading and spelling app designed for struggling readers. It was created to support children who cannot read simple CVC words (e.g. cat, pot) and who have difficulties with phonological and phonemic awareness, sound discrimination, digraphs, letter reversals, word guessing, and reading anxiety.

The program may help children who:

• struggle to hear, delete, or substitute sounds in words

• confuse similar sounds (e.g. ship/sheep, three/free)

• guess words instead of decoding

• have trouble blending digraphs and trigraphs

• confuse similar-looking letters (e.g. p/q, f/t)

• lose confidence using competitive or gamified apps

Reading with Monty includes four core activities:

Decoding Mapped to the phonetic chart (not the alphabet), allowing children to learn Australian English sounds first. Children can decode using phonetic script or standard spelling, with gradual, colour-coded spelling introduction. A hidden timer supports fluency and motivation without pressure. Requires two devices.

Spelling Also mapped to the phonetic chart, with spelling patterns introduced gradually across ten levels, finishing at Year 3 level. Levels can be skipped or repeated.

Minimal Pairs Helps children learn to hear and distinguish similar sounds (e.g. sit/seat, grow/glow), supporting accurate reading.

Nonsense Words Children read made-up words using learned sounds, removing guessing and encouraging attention to every phoneme. Requires two devices and includes audio support for parents.
