User Reviews

Reviewers largely celebrate Backyard Baseball '01 for nostalgia and faithfulness to the classic series, with players enjoying the authentic baseball feel. However, repeated issues include slow gameplay, input delays and control problems, frequent bugs (SCUMMERROR/array bounds), and missing beloved players. Fans also want faster play options and more modernized controls. Overall, the concept shines for fans, but performance and stability issues hinder the experience.
Pros
  • Nostalgia and faithfulness: feels very close to the classic Backyard Baseball experience and lets players relive childhood memories.
  • Fan-driven return: many reviewers praise Backyard Sports' comeback and consider this a strong, standout entry in the series.
  • Authentic baseball feel: supports classic baseball actions like bunting, sliding, and close plays, contributing to a genuine baseball vibe.
Cons
  • Extremely slow/laggy gameplay with long pitch delays (the pace is repeatedly described as painfully slow).
  • Input/controls issues: noticeable input delay, unwieldy hit timing, and awkward switching of stances; some devices also report a missing or non-visible cursor.
  • Frequent bugs and crashes: recurring SCUMMERRORs and array bounds errors that block progression or ruin innings/seasons.
  • Roster gaps: missing beloved players (e.g., Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas) and roster inaccuracies that disappoint longtime fans.
  • Lack of modern QoL features: no fast-play/ speed options and a call for more modernized, user-friendly controls.

Outfield won’t move and most reviews are cause it’s a classic 5$ for a game that isn’t even logical swinging when the ball is just leaving the pitchers hand.

For the next update, please add current playing players as kids too, like ohtani, Tatis, and Aaron judge and you can pick country’s to play with like my home country, South Korea or America, or Japan, like country’s taht play baseball. Also big papi, Trevor Bauer, babe Ruth, Mickey mantle, mason miller, and my favorite because my home land is Korea, Ha seong Kim. But thank you creators for making this incredible game.
