User Reviews

Overall, Welcome Suica Mobile is praised for ease of use, Apple Pay top-ups, and fast express transit tapping, especially with the English UI. However, many reviews flag serious drawbacks: money being charged without a usable card and refunds being hard or impossible; strict regional limits (top-up/card issuance in Japan; no transfer from existing Suica); reliability issues; funds expiring after 180 days with no transfer; and setup/support challenges.
Pros
  • Easy to use and quick setup with Apple Pay top-ups.
  • Express Transit feature enables fast entry/exit without opening the app.
  • English-language interface and traveler-friendly design.
  • Works offline for tapping at gates and on trains.
  • Convenient for paying and reloading while traveling in Japan.
Cons
  • Top-ups can result in charges without delivering a card or without refund options; funds may be lost.
  • Regional/transfer limitations: you may not top up or obtain a card outside Japan; existing Suica cannot be transferred to the app.
  • Reliability issues: 'Out of Service Hour' messages, cards failing after top-ups, loading failures, occasional crashes.
  • Funds expire after 180 days and are not transferable to a new account.
  • Login/registration issues with limited support and possible loops.

This worked seamlessly to travel into and around the Tokyo area while I was there. It also worked with vending machines that accepted IC cards! If the vending machine brings up another card just go to your apple wallet and switch it. I’ve seen some reviews saying IPhones can directly create a Suica card but I wasn’t sure how to do that. The physical welcome Suica card only lasts for about a month but this one lasts for 180 days but any remaining balance is forfeit after that. I didn’t try and transfer anything so I’m not sure how that would work. I would use it again and wouldn’t have to worry about topping up with cash.

The low reviews may be caused by those who don’t know how to use it
