User Reviews

Booktok: Watch Books Explained has a promising concept—bringing books to life with AI-driven visuals and the idea of original content by authors. However, user feedback highlights billing issues (frequent charges, hard cancellations), misleading ads and onboarding that push subscriptions, a limited catalog not matching promotional content, frequent technical problems with loading and playback, and weak customer support. Overall, the app shows potential but suffers from billing, content gaps, and reliability concerns that deter trial users.
Pros
  • Great concept for bringing books to life and offering AI-driven visuals.
  • AI narrators are surprisingly realistic according to at least one user review.
  • There is potential for creators to publish original content and for the app to improve over time.
Cons
  • Frequent and sometimes unexpected charges, including weekly or yearly subscriptions, with difficulty canceling.
  • Advertising and onboarding push subscriptions before users can preview content, leading to misleading expectations.
  • Limited book selection and mismatch with popular titles advertised or hoped for.
  • Persistent technical issues: videos/audios fail to load, AI visuals are inconsistent, and playback is unreliable.
  • Lack of accessible customer support or contact options for help when problems arise.
Recent reviews
Downloaded this app because ads made it seem like I could listen to/read ACOTAR content. Unfortunately, I was hit with multiple subscription screens and eventually a paywall with no visible way to close or continue for free. I tried waiting, swiping, reopening the app, and checking for hidden close buttons, but nothing worked. It was really frustrating because I just wanted to try the app before deciding if it was worth paying for. The app may have good content, but the forced paywall experience felt misleading and disappointing.

The stories I tried are not proofread and have grammatical errors throughout. The stories are also not entertaining, at least that I tried. The titles even have spelling and grammatical errors. The selection is terrible. Some stories aren’t finished. There’s no way to search specific genres or themes.

Before you can even try to watch it asks over and over again to pay. To the point when you deny 1 offer it gives you another and another again until you can’t even exit an offer without paying. Before you even get to look at the books they want you to pay. You can’t even preview to see if it’s worth it.
