User Reviews

Paper2Audio is praised for natural voices, broad content support (PDFs, EPUBs, images, etc.) and useful features, plus a generous free tier that makes it a strong productivity tool for students and researchers. The main recurring drawback is pronunciation inconsistencies with names and certain words. Some users wish for more voices and features, but overall the app is reliable, free-tier friendly, and effective at turning written material into enjoyable, time-saving audio.
Pros
  • Natural-sounding, podcast-like voices that reduce listener fatigue and are pleasant for long listening sessions.
  • Excellent handling of diverse content types (PDFs, EPUBs, long web articles) with useful features like image summaries and footnote cleanup.
  • Generous free tier with substantial weekly hours (around 50-56 hours) that often eliminates the need to upgrade.
  • Significant time-savings and productivity boosts—you can listen while doing chores, commuting, or multitasking, helping manage heavy reading loads.
Cons
  • Pronunciation issues, especially with names and heteronyms, leading to occasional misreads or confusion.

The first time you create an audio file, say from an epub book, you probably won’t realize a voice was chosen for you, like me. I went to go change the voice, and the app makes you create an entirely new file. I expected the voice I chose yet I was given the same voice as the first time, again. I went to change the voice, but now I’m out of free credits, so the app is pointless. Also, It might be a good quality voice, but good luck changing a voice you don’t like. Why not just be like Speechify? They have good quality voices, a much bigger selection of voices, and instant (not 20 minutes wait) and unlimited access. Why would changing the voice in this app create an entirely new audiobook, which you may not even like, or worse, is the wrong one? Then you can’t use the app anymore. It makes no sense practically speaking.

This has been exactly what I needed to help write. I can put chapters in and listen to them cause I process them better that way. It’s not perfect but it’s free and easy to use! A must for budget friendly options!!
