User Reviews

Users praise what3words for its precise 3-word addressing and emergency-use value, frequently noting its lifesaving utility for first responders. However, widespread criticism centers on monetization: high Pro pricing, gating of essential features behind a subscription, and a cluttered free version with ads. Additional complaints include reliance on Apple Maps for navigation and a perceived shift toward a money-driven model, which many feel undermines the app's usefulness.
Pros
  • Critical tool for locating 911 callers and guiding responders in difficult locations.
  • Precise 3-word addressing provides accurate, shareable location data for navigation.
  • Innovative mapping concept with broad real-world utility.
  • Versatile for tasks beyond emergencies (e.g., parking and campground management).
  • Widely praised as an amazing, lifesaving system by users in emergency and field-work contexts.
Cons
  • Steep Pro pricing with core features gated behind a subscription (examples include $5/month or $50/year).
  • Free version cluttered with ads and lock icons blocking features.
  • Navigation is heavily tied to Apple Maps, with other services gated behind Pro or not available.
  • Perceived monetization-driven changes and a 'money grab' model that undermines usefulness.

Loved the idea behind this, but after checking it out after a couple years I am heartbroken to see it was given the subscription model treatment. I can’t get my friends to even try it now because like me they refuse to use an app that doesn’t even offer a one time purchase to at the very least remove the ads. Gonna be reclaiming space on my phone now (because it’s getting deleted).

The Apple Watch app is not currently displaying the words. Not sure what the problem is?

Why must everyone put their apps behind a paywall to be anywhere adjacent to useful. In order for me to save favorites anymore, in an app I’ve used for years, I have to get a subscription to this map app… what?! It’s bad enough it shows me ads for clearly no reason if I can’t save a favorite place locally on my phone! So this app just lost all usefulness as I can use better free apps that aren’t Google or stuck behind a paywall. This seemed promising with the 3 word navigation, but seeing how no one I’ve ever worked with or met uses this app (probably because basic services like a local storage of locations is free everywhere else and no adverts crashing in for unrelated services) I guess I am over this. I need reliable apps for traveling that don’t put basic functions behind a subscription.
