Features & Capabilities

The Checkbook 3.0 is a lightweight Chrome extension that serves as a simple transaction register. Track finances in real time, manage multiple accounts, reconcile to the penny, and take advantage of a new Shared Storage option to sync transactions with invited users. No ads, quick entry, type-ahead for common transactions, recurring items, transfers between accounts, and basic reporting help you stay on top of spending. You can customize color themes per account, search quickly, and export data to CSV for offline use.

Security and syncing features include Face ID / Touch ID, optional iCloud Drive storage to keep data across devices, and sharing capabilities with joint account owners via email or Shared Storage (subscription required). Privacy notes clarify that data is not collected from local or iCloud storage, with Shared Storage used only to share data among invited users. The built-in reporting shows spending by category and daily totals to simplify financial review.

User Reviews

The Checkbook is praised for being easy to use and a convenient on-the-go checkbook replacement that shows running balances. However, data loss and unreliable cloud backups are a major concern, and users want more recurring options and cross-account reporting. Minor gaps include per-account currency, account-name length limits, and reporting/chart access. Overall, it's popular for everyday tracking but reliability and feature gaps are repeated concerns.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a simple, straightforward interface.
  • Fast on‑the‑go transaction entry with a running balance.
  • A solid replacement for a paper check register and clear view of spending.
  • Reliable for day-to-day tracking of income and expenses.
  • Responsive, helpful support from the developer when help is needed.
Cons
  • Data loss: transactions repeatedly disappear after updates or during iCloud syncing.
  • Backup/restore failures: iCloud backups often fail to restore properly.
  • Limited recurrence options: no every-4-weeks option and limited look-ahead for recurring entries.
  • Reporting limitations: can't generate cross-account reports; reports often appear only for a single account.

I recently purchased this wonderful app and at this time it has been exceptional. I do suggest different colors for income or deposit of funds. If you make an error and put something as monthly when it should be yearly, I can change it, which I do once in a while. I like that it is so easy to work with and change anything I need to with each vendor. I hope this app stays around for years and years. I've had another one that I've probably used for 15 years then they quit updating it or even caring. I hope you stay and keep this app updated even if it ends up costing a little bit more here and there. I'd be happy to pay it. I'm just so happy you're not a subscription. I'm sick of everybody doing that. Again, thank you for having such a thoughtful easy app to work with.

I just purchased app but all I’m looking at is a blank screen

I have been using this app for more than one year. Either allow a user setting of display +ve balance in green or a prominent color/font
