User Reviews

Freenotes offers strong customization, a surprisingly capable free tier, and solid study-oriented features, making it a standout for students. However, persistent monetization, ads, and licensing shifts raise concerns about its long-term value for free users. Handwriting beautification quality is mixed. Overall, it’s an effective, user-friendly note app that risks losing appeal as pricing and ads increase.
Pros
  • Highly customizable and aesthetically pleasing UI (covers, color palettes, stickers, washi tape), with free options.
  • Strong free tier; many features available without paying, making it an attractive alternative to other note apps.
  • Very useful for studying and planning—great for schedules, tests, PDFs, and textbooks.
  • User-friendly and easy to pick up; intuitive for new users.
  • Good support for PDFs/docs and versatile note-taking workflows.
Cons
  • Excessive monetization and a marketplace for stationery; many features locked behind purchases or a subscription.
  • Ads and popups disrupt the experience and can hinder studying.
  • Free tier limitations (e.g., notebooks limit) and shifts toward paid features, with some users feeling misled by changes.
  • Handwriting beautification is not on par with expectations, producing artifacts or gibberish.
  • Licensing changes (e.g., lifetime license turning into subscription) frustrate long-time users.

The drawing portion seems reasonably well executed, but it feels excessively monetized. You know all those templates all those other note-taking apps provide? Here, you get ruled, blank, and grid, and if you want anything else, you're going to have to pay for it or make your own. There's a notion of "stationery," in a marketplace section with most prices ranging from $4-13. You buy a notebook with a specific color scheme and design, you get a certain amount of templates with it, near as I can tell. Get tired of the appearance? Buy a new one. Want a different form? Buy another stationery. There's a hundred forms in this package! What do they look like? Here's a tiny thumbnail of four. What do the rest look like? None of your business. I've never regretted purchasing a lifetime license so quickly. I feel gulled.

I starting using this app two days ago after several issues with goodnotes and I’m blown away. I’ve never had a note taking app before so customizable and so intuitive for free. There’s limitations, I think there’s only four (?) notebooks with the free version, but I believe that those notebooks are unlimited. The app’s cover is customizable (I chose pink!), the pallets of colors are customizable and they have many free pallets that are so cute, the stickers are soooo cute, there’s washi tape, and many more free additions. It’s perfect for girly girls who like to take their notes and have them be cute. I’m not one to usually write reviews but I’m just so impressed!
