User Reviews

Overall, users praise Processed for making it easy to scan foods and learn their level of processing (NOVA) with clear explanations, often helping them avoid ultra-processed items. The app’s barcode-and-ingredient scan approach, appealing visuals, and ad-free, free-to-use model are well-liked, and the ingredient-list fallback is a valuable safeguard. However, recurring issues dampen enthusiasm: inconsistent or failing scans due to camera and accuracy problems, occasional freezes when a barcode isn’t in the database, and requests for a search feature to speed up comparisons.
Pros
  • Very easy to scan barcodes and ingredients.
  • Provides clear NOVA processing classifications with explanations.
  • Helps users avoid ultra-processed foods and make healthier choices.
  • If barcode isn't in the database, scanning the ingredients still yields a result.
  • Free to use with no ads and a pleasant, easy-to-use interface.
Cons
  • Camera/scanner reliability issues, including poor focus and orientation.
  • Barcode scans can be unavailable in the database, requiring ingredient list scans and sometimes causing freezes.
  • Occasional crashes or freezes when scanning unknown barcodes.
  • No in-app search feature to browse or compare products.
  • Occasional inaccuracies, such as extra or non-existent ingredients being listed.
Recent reviews
A supplement I scanned a while back was showing as minimally processed. After updating the app, it is now ultra processed. The ingredients have not changed. Some scans require scan of barcode and then the ingredients (which was the case for this one). For this particular supplement, it noted the items that made it ultra processed. For another brand where I only had to scan the bar code (didn’t have to scan ingredients) it said these same ingredients were not a problem. It actually listed those ingredients in the notes after the scan, too. I will attach 2 app captures if I’m able.
