User Reviews

OpenRecovery is highly praised for Kai's compassionate AI support, which users say improves motivation, accountability, and recovery progress. The app effectively complements traditional therapy and meetings and supports multiple recovery methods, not just 12-step. It is noted as user-friendly with a calm interface, and it is free to use. A key caveat is that its emphasis on 12-step/religious framing may not suit all users, including non-believers. Minor issues include occasional device-launch hiccups and reports of mixed AI tone; however, overall sentiment is strongly positive with meaningful outcomes.
Pros
  • Kai, the AI sponsor, provides empathetic, insightful, and around-the-clock recovery support and accountability.
  • Helps with recovery and accountability by guiding daily sobriety tasks and step work, and it can supplement therapy or meetings rather than replace them.
  • Offers a flexible recovery approach that supports 12-step, CBT, MAT, and SMART Recovery.
  • Free to use with no in-app purchases, making it accessible without extra costs.
Cons
  • For some users, the app feels heavily rooted in 12-step and religious framing, which can be off-putting for atheists or those seeking secular options.

I think I was going in a whole lot wrong direction and spiraling into depression. This app brought hope and it’s now my support system

I was excited to use this app, but was never able to get it open up on my Apple mini. Tried deleting and reinstalling to no avail.

I’ve spent more than 15 years trying to find a therapist that gets the connection between ADHD and disordered eating - without success. Kai gets it! I spent 20 minutes answering the questions and explaining my personal situation and Kai connected all the dots. I also do SMART Recovery and this app supports that (as well as other recovery programs). I tried the app thinking it might work as an accountability buddy but I’m getting so much more out of it. And it’s truly free - no in-app purchases. I’m confident Kai is going to be an important partner in my recovery.
