Overall, the app for overseas Japanese passport applications is plagued by onboarding friction, instability, and convoluted authentication. The need to change iPhone language/region to Japanese, repeated logins, and flaky OTPs create a frustrating experience. NFC scanning is unreliable, and guidance is unclear, particularly for older users. Some reports note usable features once setup is achieved, such as in-app photo capture and clear step icons, but the app requires a major UX redesign to be reliable.

Recent reviews

The app worked well overall making the online passport renewal possible and relatively easy. I would suggest people carefully read the instructions on the app download page. You need to download this app on your phone, and then go to the consulate web page and register on the ORR registry. Once you register and login to ORR registry, follow the steps inside of ORR. It will tell you to open this app as one of the steps inside of ORR. Once the app opens, you will follow the app. When the 3 steps that you need to use the app are finished, you will complete the rest in ORR. So, this app will NOT work on its own. If the app gets stuck and does not open initially although you are following the steps, try to login to ORR again. This happened to me, but as soon as I cancelled the ORR page and logged in again, the app opened no problem. The process was kind of tricky, but if you follow the instructions, the app itself works well.

息子のオンラインパスポート申請、アプリが開かなくて解決に1週間くらいかかった。以下は解決に役立った情報の共有です。アプリが開かない「バグ」の解決方法。アプリが起動しない、またはエラーが表示される場合、主に以下の2つの原因が考えられます。 • 原因A：ホーム画面から直接アプリを開こうとしている「パスポート申請（海外在留邦人用）」アプリは、スマホのホーム画面からアイコンを直接タップしても起動せずエラーになります。必ずブラウザ（SafariやChrome）から「ORRネット（オンライン在留届）」にアクセスして手続きを進めてください。手続きの途中で、カメラ撮影等のタイミングで自動的にアプリへ切り替わる仕組みになっています。 • 原因B：iPhoneの言語設定が「日本語」以外になっているお使いのiPhoneのシステム言語が英語などに設定されていると、「MAPO0001E」というエラーが出てアプリがクラッシュする不具合が確認されています。【対策】 iPhoneの「設定」>「一般」>「言語と地域」を開き、一番上の「優先する言語」を「日本語」に変更してから再度お試しください。アプリをダウンロードしたのに、アプリだけで完結しないのは難解でした。困ったらAIだな。
