Overview

Features & Capabilities

Official OpenVPN Connect is the official client for secure access to OpenVPN’s zero‑trust VPN solutions (Access Server and CloudConnexa). It does not host a VPN service; it creates encrypted tunnels to compatible servers, enabling secure remote access with continuous identity and device verification.

Key features include OpenVPN tunneling with AES‑256 and TLS 1.3, device posture checks, MDM-friendly global config, easy import of profiles (.ovpn), captive portal detection, SAML SSO, MFA, HTTP proxy, split‑tunneling, auto-reconnect, kill switch, IPv6 and DNS leak protection, and multiple authentication methods (certificate, username/password, external certificate, MFA). It supports Wi‑Fi and cellular networks and is designed for business deployments when used with Access Server or CloudConnexa.

User Reviews

Users praise OpenVPN Connect for solid business VPN functionality, remote LAN access, and privacy (no data collection). Common complaints include broken .ovpn/file import (no file picker), VPN dropping when the device is locked or in background, general instability after updates, UI regressions in iOS 26 (toggle visuals), and missing features like manual DNS and TAP bridging. Overall, the top needs are reliable background operation and a smooth, working import flow.
Pros
  • Strong business VPN functionality with remote access to home/LAN networks.
  • Powerful and easy-to-use VPN app.
  • Privacy-focused, with no user data collection.
  • Versatile for offering your own VPN service on iOS.
Cons
  • File import and .ovpn handling broken or missing file picker.
  • VPN disconnects when the device is locked or runs in the background, and background refresh can be problematic.
  • General instability and unreliable connections after updates.
  • UI changes in iOS 26 (toggle visuals/indicators) causing confusion.
  • Missing features: manual DNS configuration and TAP bridging support.

Good support and response from the team. Good app if you’re savvy to understand the profile configurations. One caveat, although subjective, the VPN icon should be moved to the iOS tray rather than next to the top left. User experience isn’t so great when you question yourself when you established a connection or not.
