Features & Capabilities

liveBPM - Beat Detector is a professional tempo-monitoring tool for drummers, bands and DJs. It uses a high-accuracy beat-detection engine to listen through the microphone, continually displaying the current BPM and visualizing tempo changes with a tempo curve, FFT spectrum analysis, and multiple zoom modes.

It’s designed for practice, rehearsal, and live performances. Use it as an objective tempo reference, measure your time-keeping, and explore tempo changes in your music. Helpful controls include Power, Clear, a tempo-range slider, and zoom buttons; note that external microphones can improve detection and results can be fine-tuned by clapping to the beat.

User Reviews

Users praise liveBPM for fast, accurate BPM detection and reliable tempo tracking across various rhythms, making it valuable for pros in live and DAW contexts. Common drawbacks are the forced landscape UI, stability/compatibility issues after iOS updates, and concerns about ongoing maintenance. Overall the app is highly useful for tempo reference, but users seek better orientation options, improved stability, and continued updates.
Pros
  • Fast and reliable BPM detection that quickly locks onto tempo and stays steady during playback.
  • Accurate tempo readings across diverse tempos and time signatures, helpful for DAW alignment and live performance.
  • Valuable for professionals (drummers, DJs, transcription) as a tempo reference and workflow aid.
  • Useful for handling complex rhythms and providing quick tempo checks during auditions or gigs.
Cons
  • Forced landscape orientation with no portrait mode, which can disrupt workflow.
  • Stability and compatibility issues: crashes, unresponsiveness, or difficulty closing the app after iOS updates.
  • Maintenance concerns: appears not to be updated regularly and users report issues after newer iOS versions, impacting reliability across devices.

This is literally the ONLY BPM detector that I have found to be useful for my purposes. The others are just too erratic and a buddy of mine has been trying to create an app that is comparable, but gave up. I use it at practice and gigs to monitor the whole bands tempo and adjust if it gets too fast or slow.

For years certain bands I play in I had a bpm meter that use a trigger on snare. That means certain songs without snare or with overly complex patterns did read well. This app is great
