Features & Capabilities

Valley Air District is the official air-quality app for the San Joaquin Valley. It provides hourly air quality data from RAAN and is available in English and Spanish to help residents monitor air quality in their neighborhoods.

Use the app to check air quality at your current location, save up to 10 custom locations, receive alerts when conditions change, view the daily wood-burning status during Check Before You Burn, and submit confidential pollution complaints. The District serves eight counties—San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and the Valley air basin portion of Kern counties—to improve health and quality of life across the region.

User Reviews

User reviews indicate the Valley Air District app is often unreliable and unstable. Data sometimes isn’t loaded or updated for long periods, and the app can crash or freeze, requiring reinstall. Accuracy is questioned, with discrepancies between app readings and reality or other sources. Users request additional features like viewing burn status for neighboring counties and a built-in forecast. Despite occasional positives (useful in-app data when it works, helpful burn-day emails, and some fixes in updates), core reliability and feature gaps dominate feedback.
Pros
  • Useful in-app air quality information when it loads, making it a handy source for Valley air data.
  • Burn-day email updates are a helpful feature.
  • Recent updates have fixed issues like location detection, improving usability.
Cons
  • Unreliable data availability: readings often unavailable or not updated for long periods.
  • The app frequently crashes, hangs, or opens to a white screen, sometimes requiring reinstalls.
  • Inconsistent / inaccurate readings (e.g., app shows safe levels while other sources indicate risk) undermine trust.
  • Missing features and navigation gaps (e.g., can't view adjacent counties' burn status, forecast not on main page).
  • Perceived poor maintenance and slow updates.

I noticed a change of address for the service several weeks ago. Since then, it seems that the AQ readings are not available quite often. It would be nice to have a more dependable service.

You can download the app, however, you can only see the information once or twice before you have to delete the app and reinstall it in order to use the app. I’ve had several iPhones over the years and this problem is never been fixed.
