User Reviews

Reviewers generally praise the Poughkeepsie Journal app for delivering local news and keeping readers informed, with many appreciating online/e-edition access and local Hudson Valley coverage. However, widespread complaints focus on the app's performance and usability: frequent freezes, slow loading, inconsistent formatting, and poor readability on iPad; intrusive pop-up ads; navigation and login issues; and billing problems when subscriptions are interrupted or canceled. A recurring theme is the tension between valuing strong local reporting and frustration with the new app's stability and content access, including insufficient local sports coverage.
Pros
  • Keeps me up to date with local news daily, even when living out of state.
  • Strong local focus and community coverage (weather, schools, local politics).
  • Online/e-edition option provides flexibility and is often preferred over print.
  • App generally delivers timely local news and keeps readers informed.
Cons
  • Frequent freezes/crashes/hangs in the e-newspaper mode.
  • Formatting/readability issues on the new app; not easily magnified on iPad and layout differs from prior version.
  • Intrusive ads and pop-ups disrupting reading and forcing ad breaks.
  • Subscription/access issues: being charged after cancellation and inconsistent access; login/password problems and poor customer service.
  • Inadequate local sports coverage.

This newspaper has kept me up to date and informed in a great way for many years. I have muddled through the many changes knowing that the purpose of this forum is to get the news to as many people as possible in a moral and fair way. I am now living in another state and still go to the PJ for daily news.

Switching to your latest took a LONG time but much better than earlier. My main complaint however is the lack of reporting local sports and results. We have a Division I program in Marist college and a number of top notch high school sports programs in the mid-Hudson valley…..but almost no coverage. Come on!! I know the Journal is now owned by Gannet which is a national company and we get access to USA Today. That’s great but disappointing you can’t cover local teams better. Even when they have success in state tournaments the coverage is pretty sparse. Just saying!
